Letters to the Phantom
[You may now write letters to the Phantom!
Each of you will find plenty of stationery in the drawers of your vanities, along with candles, a block of sealing wax, and a stamp with your initial on it. You can use these to seal your envelopes in style!
Letters may be dropped into the flap at the Box Office at any time. Replies will appear in your dressing rooms, occasionally quite quickly. Sitting in your room to keep watch won't let you see how they're brought; they'll just appear whenever you happen to leave or fall asleep. Yes, they can be delivered overnight. Probably don't think about it too hard.]

In general. I could attempt time travel in theory, but that's far too much to deal with.
They do not help directly. I am merely holding up my end of the bargain.

Opera Ghost,
Okay, so. In general.
Can you tell us what this bargain actually is? Because it kind of sounds like it might be fake and someone's just tricking you.

Your weak attempt at insult is noted, but I assure you it is not a trick. I have already received many of my stated requirements, and there is no reason to believe I will not have them all in full. Even if something were to go wrong, I could make a beginning with this.
OG

I wasn't trying to insult you this time! I'm just pretty sure anyone who asks you to get a bunch of people to kill each other in exchange for magically fixing the world probably isn't someone you can trust!
-Steven

I see. You misunderstand the nature of this. Though my patron has abilities beyond my own, he will not be magically doing anything for me when this is over. He is only giving me the reach to do it myself.
OG

That still seems really shady? Like this is basically exactly what you've been doing to us every week.
-Steven
no subject
Exactly. I believe he thought that a similar approach would work with all of you. The situations are different, of course - I was acquainted with him before this was proposed. He helped me when no one else would.
OG

Okay and does writing all that out like that really not make you see how completely messed up this all is.
That is not sarcasm I understand that can be really hard to tell in writing, all I can do is promise that this is a sincere concern because this is not the kind of thing friends should do to each other even if he really has followed up on his promises so far.
-Steven

Why not? Are friends not meant to help one another?
This may be a meaningless concern either way. I am not certain we are friends.
OG

Friends help each other without asking them to kill random strangers!!
And I'm sorry but no, you're probably not! This is a bad partnership and you should get out before he hurts you too!
-Steven

Then I have never had any friends, and I never will. It is pointless to worry about an impossibility.
He has never hurt me. There are few people who can claim such a thing. I will remain here until I am given reason otherwise - surely you do not claim that you would be so generous?

Opera Ghost,
I don't know.
But at the trial it sounded like you cared about her.
You said you wanted to fix her.
And I know she could be friends with anyone. Even me or mom.
I don't know if I could really be your friend now, after all this. But it's never impossible, even if you think it is. The Diamonds managed to change, and so did my mom even with as many people as she hurt.
You could too. Maybe then you could actually be happy.
But you'd have to try. I could help you.

That actually means it's probably easier for you to change, honestly. If you know as much about us as you claim to, you know how big Homeworld is on roles and stuff.
-Steven.

You're being really
I can't think of the actual word, but it's when someone's being really picky and literal about what words mean and using that to not answer the actual questions being asked and stuff? You're being really that.
I meant that if people as rigid as White Diamond can even try to change then so can you and I'm pretty sure you knew that.
-Steven
[A short while later, before Steven's received and answer, a second letter appears.]
OG
Pedantic. Pedantic is the word I was trying to think of. You're being really pedantic instead of just answering.

Cannot or will not?
-Steven

You and Dr. Browning make very similar assumptions - although you are very different people.
no subject
Thanks, I think?
[Tall Stephen is smart, that's probably a good comparison?]
Okay. Do you WANT to do anything other than this?
-Steven

Sometimes. Spinel tried to destroy the Earth, didn't she, when she learned what had been done to her? But in the end, she still could not defy her purpose. She still wanted to be a friend.
no subject
If you're going to lie about Spinel at least make it kind of believable.
-Steven
[Give it a couple more memory regains and this'll either be really funny or really sad. If the Phantom were smart he'd get Steven to bet on it.]
no subject
Well, it doesn't matter. [This is what he gets for trying to express a feeling, he guesses.]
